bookBefore having a working fireplace, the initial step would be to get your chimney swept and tested to a BS5871 (part 3) for gas fires, and BS6461 for solid fuel to ascertain whether your chimney is safe to use for either gas or solid fuel appliances. You can contact and find a local sweep by visiting N.A.C.S (National Association of Chimney Sweeps).
Your local sweep will sweep & test the flue and provide a report detailing the pass or failure of the chimney. If the chimney fails its integrity test, you may need to get the chimney relined.
If however the chimney passes its test, you can then move on to the next step, which is to discuss what size opening can be achieved. Your sweep should provide you with an estimated WOS (Working Opening Size), this will allow you to ascertain what type of fire you can have.
Once you have a copy of the report, please do let us know the outcome and Signature Fires can then arrange to provide a quotation for any flue work that is required.
